Jammu and Kashmir Elections 2024, Phase 1 Polling: Voting Paused in Kishtwar Due to Voter ID Dispute

Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for the first phase of its 2024 assembly elections, with polling set to take place on Wednesday, September 14, across 24 constituencies in seven districts. This election marks a historic moment as it will be the first assembly election in the region since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, which altered J&K's special status.

A total of approximately 23.27 lakh voters, including 5.66 lakh youths, are expected to cast their ballots to decide the fate of 219 candidates, with 90 independents among them. The polling will begin at 7 am and conclude at 6 pm. Eight of the 24 assembly segments are in three districts of the Jammu region, while the remaining 16 are spread across four districts in the Kashmir Valley.

This election is significant as it is the first in a decade for many districts located on both sides of the Pir Panjal mountain range. Security arrangements have been heightened to ensure a smooth voting process, with special provisions made for elderly voters, women, and those with disabilities. The second and third phases of voting will be held on September 25 and October 1, respectively, with the final vote count scheduled for October 8.
