Atishi Selected by Arvind Kejriwal to Become Delhi's Next Chief Minister

Delhi's Education Minister Atishi has been chosen to succeed Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister, following his recent decision to step down. The announcement came during a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators, where party leader Dilip Pandey suggested that Mr. Kejriwal select the next Chief Minister. When Mr. Kejriwal proposed Atishi's name, the legislators unanimously supported her appointment, electing her as the leader of the legislature party.

Atishi, an Oxford graduate and Rhodes scholar, has been instrumental in the AAP’s efforts to reform Delhi's education system. She currently holds several key portfolios, including Education and Public Works. Atishi took over as a minister following the arrest of former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in a corruption case related to Delhi’s now-discontinued liquor policy. She has also served as the party’s spokesperson during Kejriwal and Sisodia’s absence.

In a public statement, Atishi expressed gratitude for the trust Mr. Kejriwal placed in her and urged the people of Delhi to support his return as Chief Minister. Her rise to leadership comes shortly after Mr. Kejriwal’s surprise announcement to resign, stating that he would only return to the position after the public's decision in the upcoming elections.

The elections in Delhi, originally set for February, may now be held earlier, with Mr. Kejriwal calling for them to coincide with Maharashtra’s elections in November. Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Sisodia plan to campaign directly to the voters to win back public support.
