Who Is Ryan Wesley Routh? Suspect Arrested in Connection with Donald Trump Assassination Plot, Previously Sought to Fight in Ukraine

Former U.S. President Donald Trump survived an alleged assassination attempt in Florida on Sunday, according to the FBI. Gunshots were fired near his golf course, just two months after a similar incident occurred at a rally in Boulder, Pennsylvania. The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested after Secret Service agents engaged in a confrontation near the golf course's perimeter.

Routh had been hiding in bushes and fled when agents fired shots, escaping in a black vehicle. Authorities were able to track down the car with the assistance of witnesses, and at the scene, they recovered a high-powered AK-47-style rifle with a scope and a GoPro camera.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed that Routh was in custody and considered a potential suspect.

Routh, a former construction worker from Greensboro, North Carolina, has no military experience but had previously expressed a desire to fight in Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion. He had shared his willingness to fight and die in Ukraine in social media posts and claimed in an interview that he helped recruit others to join the conflict.

This was not Routh’s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2002, he was arrested after a standoff in which he barricaded himself inside a building with a fully automatic weapon. Despite his past, the outcome of those charges remains unclear.

Routh’s son, speaking to the media, mentioned that his father harbored strong anti-Trump sentiments but claimed he was not violent and doubted he even owned a firearm.

In response to the incident, U.S. President Joe Biden praised the efforts of the Secret Service and law enforcement for ensuring the safety of Trump and those around him.
