The BJP-led NDA government is set to implement the ‘one nation, one election’ initiative during its current tenure, according to sources. The sources also revealed that the nationwide census exercise will soon commence, and Jammu and Kashmir is expected to regain statehood after elections, as swiftly as possible.
They emphasized that ‘one nation, one election’ is not just a proposal but a reality that will be put into action during this term. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address last month, stressed the importance of simultaneous elections, stating that frequent elections disrupt the country’s development process. He urged political parties to align for the nation’s progress, and reiterated that the nation must unite to realize the goal of synchronized elections.
As the NDA government marks its first 100 days in its third term, sources affirmed the alliance's stability moving forward. In his Independence Day speech, Modi also highlighted the need for national resources to be directed towards the common citizen and reiterated the government’s commitment to the ‘one nation, one election’ vision, which was a key promise in the BJP's election manifesto.
A high-level panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind earlier this year proposed holding simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as a first step. This could be followed by synchronizing local body polls within 100 days. Additionally, the Law Commission is expected to propose holding simultaneous elections for all levels of government by 2029, with provisions for stability in cases like a hung assembly or no-confidence votes. The Kovind panel has yet to specify a timeline for the full implementation of these simultaneous elections.
