India and China have committed to intensifying their efforts and acting swiftly to ensure complete disengagement in the remaining areas of eastern Ladakh. India views this as critical for the normalization of bilateral relations. The decision came following discussions between India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the BRICS NSAs meeting in St. Petersburg.
According to a Chinese statement, which did not explicitly address disengagement, both sides reviewed progress in border talks and emphasized that stability in their relations aligns with the long-term interests of both nations.
The meeting between Doval and Wang marked another step in the ongoing high-level diplomatic efforts over the last few months. These discussions aimed at resolving the remaining areas of dispute, focusing on achieving disengagement and bringing an end to the military standoff that began in May 2020.
In addition to this meeting, there were two rounds of diplomatic negotiations in recent months to address unresolved issues. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had also met Wang twice in July during multilateral events, emphasizing the need to resolve the standoff and restore peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
According to the Indian government, the meeting provided both nations with an opportunity to review recent efforts toward resolving remaining issues along the LAC. It also highlighted the potential for stabilizing and rebuilding bilateral relations.
