In Jammu and Kashmir, security forces have engaged in three separate encounters, resulting in the deaths of five terrorists and two soldiers. The first gunfight occurred in Baramulla’s Pattan area, following a joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police. Acting on intelligence reports, the forces launched the mission late Friday, which led to the killing of three terrorists early this morning in Chak Taper Kreeri. The operation is still underway.
In another incident, two terrorists were shot dead by soldiers of the Army's Rising Star Corps in Kathua on Friday. Large caches of arms and ammunition were recovered after the operation.
Tragically, two Army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), lost their lives in a separate encounter with terrorists in the Kishtwar district. Four soldiers were wounded during the operation, with Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar and Sepoy Arvind Singh succumbing to their injuries, one from a grenade splinter and the other from a bullet wound.
These encounters occurred just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled election rally in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district. Security measures have been heightened across Doda and Kishtwar to ensure the event proceeds without incident. This will be the first prime ministerial visit to Doda in over four decades.
The upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections will be conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the vote counting set for October 8. This will mark the first Assembly election in J&K since the abrogation of Article 370, which previously granted special status to the region.
