During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Rahul Gandhi pledged that the Congress party would deposit ₹1 lakh into the account of one woman from every poor household if they were to win. In response, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar indirectly critiqued Gandhi’s promise, emphasizing that achieving progress is not a simple task and requires sustained effort and hard work.
Speaking to the Indian diaspora in Geneva, Jaishankar remarked that building a strong nation involves developing human resources, establishing infrastructure, and creating effective policies. He noted that life is not an easy, instant process—using the term "khata-khat"—and stressed that success comes through diligence and hard work, not shortcuts.
He also highlighted the importance of manufacturing for a country aspiring to be a major global power, pointing out that advanced technology cannot be developed without a solid manufacturing base. Taking a subtle swipe at critics, Jaishankar said some people believe India is incapable of such progress or shouldn't even attempt it, but he stressed that the path to becoming a global power is closely tied to fostering technological and industrial capabilities.
